THE UTEP STUDENT UNION ADDITION extended the existing student union facility to the east, and was considerably larger than the original Student Union Facility originally constructed on the UTEP campus. The structure consists of an all exposed concrete system of two way beams spaced at about twelve feet on center each way. The main carrying beams span about 48 feet between column supporting the waffle system the Three story building with basement has a full three story atrium space in the interior, which contain the concrete stairs spanning from floor to floor, without supports except at the connection to the floors. In order to lighten the structure of the large main concrete members desired by the Architect, interior forms were cast into the stair framing members, including the stair flights. This reduced the weight of the stair system, which cantilevers from each of the floors considerably.
