THE STANTON STREET BRIDGE PROJECT included crossing facilities, inspection facilities, offices for city of El Paso related offices, and the construction of a pedestrian walkway shade canopy on the walkway portion of the bridge. The original bridge structure design, based on the original design codes in effect resulted in a structure that did not have sufficient capacity to support the new pedestrian shade canopy. Calculations showed that removal of portions of the original overhand structure and concrete railing did not reduce the capacity of the bridge structural, but did result in sufficient reduction of weight to offset against the weight of the new canopy shade structure. The result was that the use of the original bridge structure, to support the new shade canopy, was accepted by the approval agencies.
