THE SEARS STORE BUILDING AT THE SUNLAND PARK MALL with the Architectural firm of Fouts and Gomez was the anchor store at the shopping mall when it opened. Originally, constructed as a "Popular" store, the building was bought by Sears. The structure consisted of concrete masonry unit walls supporting the second level and the roof structure. The second floor structure was standard concrete deck on permanent metal forms with steel beams on a moderately large span grid. A portion of the roof formed a triangular pitch glass atrium for the full length of the building, providing light and an interesting architectural feature. The roof structure consisted of a steel framed system with special trusses, which support the atrium structure across the building. A portion of the lower level concrete masonry walls served as the retaining wall on the uphill side of the building. The concrete masonry walls were designed to serve as retaining walls so that all of the wall system remained concrete masonry construction.
