This project involved the structural evaluation of an existing fabrication facility in Canutillo, TX. Johnson Plate and Tower is the manufacturer of wind turbine towers and with the rapid development of the technology, the need for larger, taller towers necessitated upgrading the existing overhead crane systems to overhead cranes with larger capacities. The evaluation necessitated the use of multiple three-dimensional computer models and thorough fatigue analysis. The existing overhead crane system was capable of lifting 10-foot diameter, 1-inch walled tubes. After the work had been complete, the overhead crane system was capable of lifting 14-foot diameter, 1-1/2-inch walled tubes.
