THE TELESCOPE ATRIUM ADDITION TO THE INSIGHTS MUSEUM in the downtown area of El Paso-with Portal Architects provided another dimension to the museum facility. The addition on the existing roof consisted of a centrally located base, independent of the main structure, which supported a large telescope for viewing of the skies at night. This facility included an enclosure for the public, for fundraising events and for hosting functions to use the telescope for teaching purposes. The design of the structural steel telescope support and foundation provided for restricted lateral motion, which could affect the telescope function. Construction of the addition was done without closing the museum to the public and is successfully  used on an ongoing basis for promotional and educational purposes.
